Today’s digital world is not at all safe and it is quite possible that a hacker may be trying to access the personal information stored on your system. This is why a VPN or Virtual Private Network has become very important.

When you use a VPN on a router, any device which connects to this router would be able to access the features of the VPN and stay protected.

Also, you just have to set up the VPN on the router just once after which you do not have to worry about switching it on or off. Once configured, the VPN will remain on forever. Wifi poaching can also be avoided when you set up the tp link VPN on your router.

From the above points, you can see how important setting up VPN on your router is. The step-by-step tutorial below will tell the users about how they can set up PPTP/L2TP VPN on TP-Link routers.

How to setup OpenVPN on DD-WRT Routers

The following is required for VistaVPN to work with a DD-WRT router:

  • Buy a secure VistaVPN connection package
  • An internet connection
  • DD-WRT compatible router running v3

Before following this guide, you will need to install DD-WRT on your router. To do this, you will need to go to DD-WRT’s router database and search for your router’s model number to see if your router is compatible or find a beta build for your router. This guide uses KONG’s beta build of DD-WRT v3.0-r31520M on a Netgear R7000.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Certain beta builds may not work with OpenVPN. Please read the feedback in the build forum before installing a beta build. Also note, regardless of what model router you have or version of DD-WRT you are installing, there is a chance of bricking your router (i.e. rendering the router completely useless) if the process of putting DD-WRT on the router does not complete properly. Please thoroughly read and follow the related documentation regarding the updating procedure for your router, to minimize the risk of bricking your router.

Initial DD-WRT Setup and Important Notes

Step 01.

Please check and consider the following before setting up your VPN connection in DD-WRT:

  • If you are running a router-behind-router configuration you will want to make sure your DD-WRT router is on a different subnet than any other router/modem on your network. This can be done by going to Setup/Basic Setup tab and changing your Local IP address to ‘192.168.8.1’ without quotes
  • We suggest adding the following static DNS addresses: 198.18.0.1 and 8.8.8.8, on the basic setup tab
  • Please check to ensure the NTP client is enabled and set to the correct time zone, which can be found at the bottom of the basic setup tab

Step 02.

Enable Syslogd so you can get logs if you run into any trouble with your setup. You can do this by going to Services tab and scrolling down to System Log, then Enable Syslogd.

Configuring the VPN Connection

Step 03.

To setup the VPN connection on your router, go to the Services/VPN tab, enable the OpenVPN Client, and set the connection up using the following settings:

Then point your web browser to your DD-WRT Administration Page, which usually by default is http://192.168.1.1 – for others who may have changed the default LAN-side router address, the gateway address of the attached network adapter is usually acceptable. If you are having trouble getting to this page, you may need to reset the router to factory default settings. You can do this by holding down the button on the back or bottom of the router for 30 seconds or until the lights flash turn off and back on.

Step 02.

Click the ‘Setup’ tab from the navigation area – a username and password prompt will appear. The correct credentials must be entered to continue.

If your using a router behind router setup Please make sure to change your routers ‘Local IP Address’ to a different subnet ex.192.168.3.1 note this will change your DD-WRT’s Administration page IP to http://192.168.3.1 or whatever you change it to.

Once your down scroll to the bottom of the page and click the ‘Save’ button and reboot the router by clicking the ‘Administration’ tab at the top scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking the ‘Reboot Router’ button.

Step 04.

Once the router has rebooted which can take a few minutes login to the DD-WRT Administration page using the IP http://192.168.1.1 or if you changed the ‘Local IP Address’ the IP you changed it to (ex. http://192.168.3.1). You can view that your connected by going to the ‘Status’ tab and selecting ‘WAN’ sub tab. Once there you will see your Gateway is our servers IP address and the ‘Login Status’ Connected.
